A major change has come to the e-passport process in Bangladesh. On February 18, 2024, the Security Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a circular stating that from now on, police verification will no longer be required to get an e-passport. Passports will be issued on the basis of National Identity Card (NID) or Birth Registration Certificate.
Which documents are required for whom?
To get an e-passport, applicants will have to provide the necessary documents according to their age:
Below 18 years: Online Registered Birth Registration Certificate (BRC, English version).
18-20 years: NID card or Online Registered Birth Registration Certificate (BRC, English version).
Above 20 years: Only NID card. However, applicants can submit online birth registration certificates through foreign missions.
In case of children: NID card of parents.
Proof of address: Recent utility bill (gas, electricity or water).
Special circumstances: Approval of the Department of Protective Services of the Ministry of Home Affairs in case of adoption or guardianship.
Required documents by profession
Doctor, Engineer, Driver: Relevant technical certificate.
Student: Latest educational qualification certificate or certificate of educational institution/student ID.
Private employee: Official certificate of the institution.
Government employee: Government Order (GO), No Objection Letter (NOC), certificate, PRL order or pension book.
Farmer: Land title.
Businessman: Trade license.
To be submitted at the time of application
Summary of the application form (print copy) with the scheduled time for biometrics.
Completed application form registered online (print copy).
Passport fee deposit receipt.
Lab-printed recent photograph (on gray background) for those below 6 years of age.
E-Passport application process
1. Online application form filling:
Go to the website www.epassport.gov.bd and click on the “Apply Online” tab.
The candidate should specify the relevant passport office with the name of the district and police station.
An account should be opened with e-mail, NID/birth registration and mobile number.
2. Providing information and paying fees:
All information should be filled in according to the NID.
The fee can be paid online through Visa, MasterCard, bKash, Nagad, Rocket, UPay, bank transfer.
3. Appointment for biometrics:
A convenient date should be selected from the online calendar.
On the appointed day, a photograph should be taken and fingerprints should be given at the passport office.
4. Passport distribution:
After submitting the application, a notification of readiness will be sent to the mobile via SMS/e-mail.
The passport should be collected from the relevant office with the distribution slip and NID.
E-Passport Fee and Timeframe
The fee has been fixed in three categories based on the validity and delivery of e-passport:
Super Express: 2 working days.
Express: 7-10 working days.
Regular: 15-21 working days.
Online Passport Status Check
To know the current status of the applied passport, you can check it by visiting the link https://www.epassport.gov.bd/authorization/application-status and using the 13-digit Application ID or Online Registration ID (OID).
Collection of e-passport without police verification
Earlier, after biometrics, a call was made for police verification, which has now been abolished. Applicants can collect their passports directly from the office on the scheduled day.
This change has made the e-passport application process easier and faster, which will reduce time and hassle for citizens.
