Alleging that a well-planned conspiracy is going on with the BNP, the party’s general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Initially, the minority torture they campaigned on, it seems that even one or two percent of it is not correct. Second is occupation. This is a campaign. I am forced to say that these actions are being done targeting BNP like before. It is very unfair. We have struggled for 15 years for democracy, for the right to vote. BNP has been the most persecuted in 15 years, Khaleda Zia has served 6 years in prison. Many killed, missing, victims of lawsuits.
It should be remembered that no problem can be solved without an elected parliament in a democracy. He also thinks that the current government needs to sit in discussions with the political parties to know what the interim government wants, what the people want, what the political parties want.
He said these things at a press conference at BNP’s political office in Gulshan in the capital on Wednesday afternoon. BNP organized this press conference to announce the decision of the standing committee on Tuesday night.
The general secretary of BNP alleged that a planned campaign was being carried out to undermine the revolution achieved in the student movement and to minimize the contribution of BNP. He commented that there is a deep conspiracy to fail this revolution, he said, “You will see how many campaigns are being carried out from abroad, especially from India, which they want to destroy the revolution in Bangladesh.” How many political issues they want to make communal issues. That is not acceptable at all.
In response to a question about the demand for early elections to the Interwarti government, the Secretary General of the BNP said, “We have not forgotten who tried to depoliticize during the eleventh and eleventh century. Even at that time there was an attempt to completely cancel and wipe out our party. We cannot forget these words. It is for my democracy, for my politics, for the welfare of my country that I have to remember these words. If I see those faces again, then enough doubts arise, questions come.’
For that reason, Mirza Fakhrul commented that the people of this country do not want to see those who worked as friends of the previous Awami League government, those who helped them, in the same way as those who worked to disrupt and destroy democracy.
He said, ‘People want a democratic setup here, they want democracy. People want elections. These things should be kept in mind.
In response to a question whether he sees any signs of depoliticization in the current government, he said, ‘No, I do not see such signs. I am warning. I have a word of caution. Have some looks? We are afraid to see these faces.
But Mirza Fakhrul said, “Suddenly, they are coming to the front page of the media. According to them, the theory is being propagated. I don’t want to name anyone. I think this is not good for a healthy democratic process.
Recently Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman pointed to BNP in a party program and spoke about the demand for early elections to the interim government and occupation in this flood situation. Highlighting the issue, a journalist wants to know the statement of BNP in this regard. In response, BNP Secretary General said, ‘I have already said that this is a well-planned conspiracy. Because we have not forgotten about one-eleven. What happened at one-eleven was an attempt at depoliticization. Those who don’t have public support, people don’t think they can run the government, they have different thoughts, I’m not naming any party. The biggest thing is that our fight is to restore democracy. That’s what elections are for. It is our right. We have fought and struggled for the election for so long.
Referring to Jamaat-e-Islami, Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘For the cancellation of the caretaker government, we did a movement together with those parties. Many of those groups have suffered a lot of torture in their movement. Even their offices have been closed. I will not do any other political thought at this moment except that movement.
He said, ‘Yes, the Interwarti government has come through a movement-revolution. Of course this government should be given reasonable time. We are doing all kinds of cooperation for that, as long as we think the government will be in the right truck.
Without mentioning anyone’s name, Mirza Fakhrul said, “If I think that one person can make heaven at all – my thought will not be correct. People will decide how the country will run. We have raised the demand for reform. We have given 31 points. Reduced from 31 points to 10 points, from 10 points to one point. We protested about this and went out to plow all over Bangladesh. We want reform. But that reform must be with the support of the people.
BNP has asked the interim government to give ‘reasonable’ time to repair the state. When asked whether there is any idea of that logical time, Mirza Fakhrul said, “This is why discussion is needed.” The concept of reasonable time will depend on mutual negotiation. What we want, what they want, what the people want, there has to be a discussion.
That is why I have said that there is a need for a quick discussion between the political parties with the current government. I said it very strongly, I am saying it today. Otherwise, misunderstandings are created.
Regarding the withdrawal of the government’s order banning Jamaat-e-Islami, BNP Secretary General said, “We are not in favor of banning any political party, whatever party it is. In our constitution anyone has the right to organize. But freedom-sovereignty must be in favor. I do not believe in independence of Bangladesh, such a party cannot be supported. But we think that people have the right to create an organization and do politics.
Mirza Fakhrul said that in some places miscreants are trying to blame BNP by committing misdeeds. To be clear, we will not tolerate any misbehavior or crime. The party has already taken action against those who are doing this.
He said that the case should not be filed indiscriminately. I will tell the law enforcement forces – you should investigate first. I will also call upon the party leaders and workers in this regard, not to file any case which does not have substance. We are going through a transitional period. This interim government should cooperate and bring back a stable environment. Because one of the goals of the interim government is to create an environment for elections. If not, it won’t happen.
Foundation anniversary program limited due to flood, money will go to relief fund: BNP will hold the party’s foundation anniversary program on September 1 in a limited form due to severe floods.
Mirza Fakhrul said, BNP will not organize colorful programs on the occasion of its foundation anniversary celebrations. Rather limited programs will be held. Wreaths will be laid at the grave of former president Ziaur Rahman, the founder of BNP, in Sherebangla Nagar only on September 1. The party flag will be at half mast in the party office.
Besides, a doa and milad mahfil will be organized. Where people of the country and students will pray for the victims of the movement. Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman will be prayed for to return to the country soon. Those money will be given to the relief aid among the flood victims.
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan was also present at the press conference.
