Ministry of Public Administration wants to buy 200 Mitsubishi Pajero Jeep vehicles for District Commissioner (DC) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO). The price of each car of QX model 2477 cc is more than Tk 1 Crore 69 Lakh. The government will spend about 339 crore rupees to buy the cars. Compared to last year, an additional 23 lakh rupees will have to be added per vehicle this year.
The Ministry of Public Administration has written to the Finance Secretary on October 7 asking for the budget for the purchase of these vehicles for DC and UNO. To maintain the dynamics of public administration, district and upazila administrations have to conduct mobile courts regularly. Apart from this, the Ministry of Public Administration has informed the Ministry of Finance that it is necessary to buy these vehicles to maintain law and order. Earlier last month, Directorate of Public Vehicles wrote to the Ministry of Public Administration asking for additional money for the purchase of 200 new vehicles for DC and UNO. This department of the government supplies and maintains vehicles to the government transport pool at the district and upazila levels.
Transport Commissioner. Abul Hashanat Humayun Kabir said, “The lifespan of vehicles used in district administration and upazila administration is 14 years. Allotment has been sought in favor of 200 vehicles whose age has exceeded 14 years. The sector has not been created for new use.
He said, “No new utility has been created and allocation has not been requested. Even went outside the law and did not ask for allocation. Specifically, the allocation has been requested to buy the cars which are very old.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, the state-owned Pragati Industries Limited will supply these vehicles at a price of Tk 1 crore 69 lakh 35 thousand each. In the last financial year, the price of these cars of the same model was Tk 1 crore 46 lakh 20 thousand. The price per car increased by Tk 23 lakh 15 thousand during the year. Officials of the Directorate of Public Vehicles said that it is not possible to buy a car without getting an allocation based on the revised price.
An official of the finance department said that the finance department is reviewing the proposal sent by the public administration ministry. No final decision has been made yet.
