An allegation has been received of an attack on the house of an English expatriate in Chhatak, Sunamganj. Mahbubur Raja Ripon Chowdhury, an English expatriate from Shimul Tala area of Chhatak upazila, is suffering from extreme insecurity.

According to local sources, on Thursday, December 26, Mahmudur Rahman Chowdhury Shipu and his cousin Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury (Kuti) along with several other criminals from Sylhet metropolitan area attacked and vandalized Ripon Chowdhury’s house. During this, the miscreants demolished the wall of the expatriate’s house. This caused damage worth at least lakhs of taka. Later, the miscreants fled after being chased by the locals. Currently, the expatriate family is suffering from extreme insecurity. Shipu is currently living in a house in the Shahi Eidgah area of Sylhet metropolitan area.

Investigations revealed that Ripon Chowdhury had been in a dispute with the Shipu gang over land-related issues and demands for large sums of extortion. In addition, he had been threatening to take over Raja Chowdhury’s house and property if he did not pay a ransom of one million taka at the right time. When he did not agree to this, Shipu and his associates resorted to tactics. At one stage, on Thursday (December 26), several terrorists and miscreants carried out a planned attack and vandalism from the Shahi Eidgah area of Sylhet city. Later, the house and property were saved by the locals, but the guard wall could not be saved. Although several cases are pending in the court against Shipu. After all this, his running away has not stopped.

When I spoke to Mahbubur Raja Ripon Chowdhury, an expatriate in England, on the phone to find out about this, he said that Shipu and his gang had been demanding a ransom of one million taka and threatening to take over the house for a long time. When I did not agree to this, they tried to attack my house on Friday. At that time, they vandalized the wall of my house. He also said that he has a video of it preserved. Later, they fled after being chased by the locals. He said, I have informed the police station about the matter. Since I and my family are abroad, there is a delay in filing the case. He also said that the miscreants are spreading a bad name in my name by creating a fake document. But till date, I have not had any problems with them. Then he demanded a remedy and sought the intervention of the higher authorities of the administration.

When contacted on the mobile phone of Chhatak Police Station Officer-in-Charge Golam Kibria, he said that he is not aware of any such matter. If he receives a complaint, he will investigate the matter and take legal action. When we tried to contact Shipu on his mobile phone, it was not possible to get any statement as his phone was switched off.
