In the last 10 years, the country has increased by 40 lakh 58 thousand 799 economic units. The total number of economic units in the country in 2024 stands at 1 crore 18 lakh 77 thousand 364. Of these, permanent economic units are 62 lakh 88 thousand 214. Temporary 5 lakh 76 thousand 621 and the number of families engaged in economic activities is 5 lakh 12 thousand 529.

In 2013, the total economic units were 78 lakh 18 thousand 565. Of these, permanent 45 lakh 14 thousand 91, temporary 4 lakh 82 thousand 903 and families engaged in economic activities were 28 lakh 21 thousand 571.

This information has emerged from the preliminary report of the Economic Census 2024. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) conducted the survey.

Out of the total economic units in the country, there are 55 lakh 31 thousand 203 in cities. 10 years ago, there were 22 lakh 29 thousand 546. In this case, the units have increased by 13 lakh 1 thousand 657 in the span of 10 years.

Meanwhile, in the 2024 census, the number of economic units in villages stood at 83 lakh 46 thousand 161. In the 2023 survey, there were 55 lakh 89 thousand 19. In this case, there was an increase of 28 lakh 57 thousand 142. Economic units have increased at a higher rate in villages than in cities.

The report says that only 8.77 percent of the total economic units are in the industrial sector. The rest are in the service sector. 93.53 percent or 1 crore 11 lakh 9 thousand 2 units are run by men. There are 768,042 female directors in the units. Hijras are managing 320 economic units. 37,61,034 people are working in the country’s economic units. Of these, 56.82 percent are rural.

The report also said that the growth in the productive sector is quite low. On the other hand, there has been massive growth in the service sector. 91 percent of the total economic units are dominated by the service sector. In addition, the number of women in employment has decreased in 2024 compared to 2013. In the 2024 economic census, the number of economic units in cities is 29.73 percent. On the other hand, the number in villages is 70.27 percent. Considering the total number of economic units, the villages have a higher dominance.
