The police are piling the dead bodies of those who were shot by the police during the anti-discrimination student movement lying on the street into a van. A video has recently gone viral on social media. This video spread on Facebook is of Ashulia police station in Savar.
The policeman seen in the video busy piling the bodies is Inspector (Investigation) Arafat Hossain of Dhaka District North Intelligence Police. His village home is in Barisal. He joined the intelligence department of Dhaka district about two years ago. Arafat studied in the Department of Geography and Environment of Jagannath University.
Arafat’s father. Arif Hossain is a retired Headmaster of Badratuni Secondary School and former President of Harinathpur Union Awami League.
Meanwhile, Arafat has been nowhere to be found since the video went viral. He went into hiding. His mobile number is also switched off. The identity of the other policemen in the video is yet to be found.
The video went viral on social media throughout the day on Friday (August 30). The video is initially believed to have been captured from the second floor of the building in front of the Ashulia police station.
In the viral video, two policemen are seen holding one by the arm and one by the leg and throwing it into the van. Before that, they piled the bodies in the van and covered them with cloth. Finally the body is lifted and covered with a banner. At the end, the presence of policemen is seen.
At 1 minute 6 seconds of the video, a poster can be seen, which is of Abul Hossain, the local Dhamsona Union President candidate and Ward No. 7 member candidate. By looking at that poster, it is confirmed that the scene of the video is near Ashulia police station.
The incident took place at the intersection towards the SB office, moving from the highway towards the police station. Inside the video, the sandbags were piled up in front of the building leading to the SB office. But they were removed during police station cleaning.
Eyewitnesses said that the location of the protesting students was identified by flying a drone. But I don’t know if it is a police drone or not. When the students entered the different lanes of the police station, the police fired at them. Several people were shot and died. The police took the bodies in front of their police station. The bodies were put in a police van and set on fire.
In this regard, Dhaka District North Detective Police Inspector Riaz Uddin Ahmed told Biplab media, “Arafat broke down after Arafat’s photo went viral on social media. Arafat has not come to office yet. We did not fire at the students that day, he added. On that day, we followed the instructions of Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Abdullahil Kafi of Dhaka District Police.
Incidentally, the anti-discrimination quota activists started gathering at the bypile area of the Dhaka-Aricha highway on August 5. Later on the news of Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, the agitators moved towards Ashulia police station. Meanwhile, the police fired at the protesters. In this incident, 15 people died in Ashulia on August 5 (excluding the bodies taken in the van).
It has been reported that 75 people were killed by the police in Savar and Ashulia from July 18 to August 5 during the anti-discrimination student movement. More than 450 people have been treated in the hospital after being shot. Many of them are permanently crippled.
