A court in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, has sentenced a man named Parvez—also known as Abul Kalam—to life imprisonment in a case involving the rape of a police officer’s wife following a robbery at their home. Additionally, he has been fined Tk 2 lakh; failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Judge Abu Hanif of the Cox’s Bazar Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 announced the verdict on Wednesday (September 9) afternoon.

According to case details and Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Iftekhar Mahmud, Parvez and his accomplices raided the rented home of a police officer—who was stationed at the Dulahazara Safari Park with the Tourist Police—in Chakaria Municipality on the night of July 15, 2015. After committing the robbery, they raped the officer’s wife.

The incident caused a major stir across Chakaria and the entire Cox’s Bazar district. Police subsequently conducted raids, arrested the accused, and produced them before the court.

Following a lengthy trial and the recording of testimonies, the court sentenced Parvez to life imprisonment for the rape. The court also ordered a fine of Tk 2 lakh, with a provision for an additional 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

Meanwhile, the plaintiff’s side has expressed satisfaction with the verdict. The victim’s family hopes that this judgment will ensure justice and set a precedent for deterring such crimes.
