BNP’s 62 proposals for constitutional reform

BNP presented 62 constitutional reform proposals in the Bangladesh National Parliament on Tuesday (November 26), including proposals to include a caretaker government system during elections, form a bicameral parliament, balance the powers of the prime minister and president, and create the posts of vice president and deputy prime minister.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed submitted the proposal to Professor Ali Riaz, head of the Constitutional Reform Commission. He reached the office after noon and stayed there for about half an hour. Professor Borhan Uddin Rana was present as a member of the BNP delegation at the time. Later, he spoke to reporters.

Salahuddin Ahmed said that the same person cannot be the prime minister for more than two consecutive terms; the creation of an upper house in parliament; the control of subordinate courts under the Supreme Court; and the reintroduction of the referendum provision.

He further said that the proposal addresses all issues including the republic, executive branch, judiciary, law department, election commission, schedule, so that a democratic system is achieved in the constitution. The proposal has been made so that a balance of power is created in all areas in all organs of the state.

Regarding the approval of the constitutional amendment, this senior BNP leader said that the Constitutional Reform Commission will submit its proposals to the interim government. The chief advisor said that the matter will be finalized after discussing and discussing with all political parties, social organizations, experts and representatives of society. In this case, it is necessary that everyone agrees on most of the issues. There may be disagreements in some areas. If we promise the issues on which there is consensus and reflect them in the election manifesto, then everyone will have a commitment that whoever comes to power in the next election should propose the constitution in that way.
