People are running for safe shelter due to flood water entering various neighborhoods of Sunamganj district city.

Although the river water is decreasing, it is increasing in the neighborhoods of the Haor region and the municipal city. On Tuesday morning, Surma river flowed 68 cm or 2.23 feet above the flood mark at Sholghar point in Sunamganj town at 9 am.

Meanwhile, today the water of Surma river is flowing above 40 cm. Heavy rain was predicted on Tuesday night but it did not rain much. However, it has been raining continuously since morning. In this, the water has increased in various areas including New Para, Shantibga, Dhopakhali, Bandhanpara, Balaka, Mohammadpur, Sholghar, Nabinagar, Kazir Point of Sunamganj town.

On the surface, it can be seen that people living in single-storey or mud houses are running to safe shelter. Since last night, many people are going to their safe destination with essential items. The fear of the terrible flood of 2022 is in everyone’s eyes. However, low income people are in the most trouble. They are rushing to different shelters with their families.

Meanwhile, Sunamganj Water Development Board said that the increase in water will continue. Local people fear that the situation will deteriorate further.

Flood situation has arisen in Chhatak, Doarabazar, Shantiganj, Jagannathpur, Tahirpur, Bishwambharpur, Madhyanagar, Dirai, Shalla, Jamalganj upazilas of Sunamganj district which were already flooded due to the downpour. However, Chatak Doarabazar and Sunamganj Sadar Upazila were the most affected.

Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board, Mamun Howladar said, the water of Surma river is flowing 40 cm above the flood limit at Sholghar point of Sunamganj town. In Chatak Upazila, the water of Surma river is flowing over 146 cm above the flood line.

Also, Surma river water is flowing over 16 cm in Dirai upazila. In the last 24 hours, Sunamganj received 100 mm of rain, Laure received an average of 78 mm, Chatka 84 mm and Dirai 77 mm. Although the water level of the river has decreased, the water level may increase as the rains continue. The flood situation is expected to deteriorate further.
