Hundreds of devotees are observing Itikaf at Balipara Central Jame Mosque in Paschim Balipara (Ward No. 7) of Fatepur Union No. 5 of Jaintapur Upazila of Sylhet for the last ten days of Ramadan. The holy month of Ramadan is on its way out. During this time, Muslims around the world are busy worshipping Allah day and night. They are praying in mosques in the hope of getting all the sins of their past and present lives forgiven.

Abdur Rakib, a local resident of the village, said that the presence of devotees at Balipara Central Jame Mosque has increased compared to other years. People are praying day and night in the mosque. However, like every year, 100 to 200 devotees are observing Itikaf at Balipara Central Jame Mosque for the last ten days of Ramadan. The residents of Balipara village are providing various services including Iftar and Sehri food and healthcare for those observing Itikaf.

He also said that every year, for the last ten days of Ramadan, for Itikaf, the last ten days of Maghfirat, the memory of the late Hazrat Allama Mufti Yusuf (Shyampuri) Rah., the followers of Mufti Yusuf Rah. and local devotees from various areas of greater Sylhet including Jaintapur-Gowainghat, Kanaighat, Sylhet Sadar come to this Balipara Central Jama Masjid.

Mufti Yusuf Rah. was the Imam and Khatib of this mosque for 50 years. Since that time, more than a hundred devotees used to come to this mosque and observe Itikaf. And several thousand devotees came to him and became disciples. Even after his death, his disciples continue to observe Itikaf in this mosque. Just as the villagers of Balipara have provided all kinds of services to those observing Itikaf in the past, this service will continue forever.

In the terminology of Sharia, Itikaf is called separating oneself from worldly activities and family and relatives for the sake of pleasing Allah and keeping oneself confined to the intention of worshipping Allah at a specific time and in a specific manner.

Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan is Sunnah Muakkadah Kifayah. Every year, devout Muslims from different parts of the world rush to the house of Allah, the mosque, in the hope of gaining more reward during Itikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan.
