Discussions have been going on for a long time about how to evaluate students in the new curriculum. Finally the National Curriculum Coordinating Committee (NCCC) gave final approval to the draft assessment system.
It was given final approval at a meeting of the NCCC held at the Ministry of Education on Monday (July 1) afternoon. Sources of the meeting confirmed this information. When asked about this, acting chairman of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) Prof. Moshiuzzaman said, as we have proposed, what was there before will remain the same. The assessment procedure has been finalized with some minor amendments.
He said, today’s meeting has decided on the proposed structure, the examination system according to the new curriculum. 65 percent written and 35 percent activity-based assessment of students.
As a result of the final approval, the weightage of the written portion of the summative assessment of the Madhyamik School Certificate (SSC) examination is 65 percent as per the new curriculum. And the weightage of activity-based part is 35 percent.
Activities in assessment means doing assignments, presenting, exploring, demonstrating, solving problems, making plans etc. Simply put, manual labor.
Before this, in a meeting held in the secretariat chaired by Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury in May, the evaluation method was discussed and a preliminary decision was taken. That has been finalized today.
Before that, the committee formed by the Ministry of Education to coordinate the implementation of the new curriculum and the finalization of the evaluation system made a final recommendation to give 50 percent weightage to practical evaluation and 50 percent weightage to the written part. After that, it was decided to increase the weightage of the written part by making some changes.
As per the recommendation of the said committee, the duration of written and activity-based evaluation has been kept at five hours. According to the new curriculum, the public examination that will be held at the end of class 10, has been named Madhyamik School Certificate (SSC) examination as it is now. This exam will be under the education boards.
It is known that NCTB formulated the draft evaluation system in February this year. It was also presented to the Ministry of Education. Later, the Ministry of Education formed a new committee to finalize the curriculum implementation and evaluation system.
Based on the recommendations of that committee, it was revised again in another meeting of the ministry. It was approved in the board meeting of NCTB after the ancillary work. It is then sent to the Ministry of Education for presentation at the NCCC meeting.
Note that NCCC is a ministry level committee, where the final approval of the curriculum is given.
