Two vehicles with banned Indian goods worth about 9.5 lakh taka have been seized in a drive by the Shahparan (RA) Mazar Investigation Center Police in Sylhet metropolis.
The goods were seized from in front of the Jalalabad Cantonment Board School in Bateshwar area at around 11:30 pm on Friday (January 10). At this time, a private car and a mini pickup loaded with goods were seized, but the 3 unidentified smugglers in the car escaped.
According to police and local sources, the smugglers adopted a different tactic to smuggle Indian sarees and three-piece suits in a private car on Friday night. They were pretending that the private car loaded with Indian goods was destroyed and were pulling it with the help of a mini pickup. But when the (retd) SI of the Chouks Outpost Police, Md. Sanaul Islam and a patrol team led by him became suspicious and went to seize the two cars, the smugglers fled, leaving the cars behind. At one stage, 411 pieces of Indian sarees and three-piece suits were found during a search of the private car. The estimated market value of which is 9.5 lakh taka. Later, the two cars along with the goods were seized and taken into police custody and a regular case was registered.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of the Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Saiful Islam, confirmed the truth of this matter to The Daily Morning Sun.
