Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Director of the Research Institute of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, said that the tendency of talented students to go abroad must be eliminated. Their talent must be utilized by turning it towards the homeland. For this, the guardians and the government must be proactive. Only then will the country and the nation move forward.

He said these things as the chief guest in the reception ceremony of meritorious students who received scholarships in the 17th Student Merit Scholarship Examination at the conference hall of the Students’ Home School located on Jamtala Road adjacent to Zindabazar in the city on Saturday afternoon.
At that time, he also said that talent cannot be held back. It keeps burning like a fire. The main goal of education should be to become good people by acquiring good education and developing morality and values. He also emphasized on the students’ Extra Curriculam Activities.

As a special guest, M Tajul Islam of the Sylhet Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board said, the parents of talented students have a lot of responsibility. Parents should be more attentive to their talented children and spend time for their children’s education in their busy lives.

In his speech as a special guest, Professor Dr. Engineer Aminul Haque of King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia, addressed the talented students – such merit scholarships encourage and motivate them to develop their talents.

Shamsul Kabir, Associate Professor of the Department of English, North East University, Bangladesh, said, the time of studying in school is the main foundation of the students’ educational life. Success in life is assured only if this foundation is strengthened. Therefore, students and parents have to be more responsible. Among others, Md. Atiqur Rahman of the Sylhet Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board spoke.

The 17th Student Merit Scholarship Examination was held in November 2024. The results of the scholarship were published in December of the same year.

About 500 students from more than 100 schools in and outside Sylhet city participated in the scholarship exam and 55 students were finally selected in 4 grades. Today, they were officially awarded.

At the end of the program, the Chairman of the Student Foundation, Rota: Principal M.A.H. Milon, in his presidential speech, advised the meritorious students to be more focused on their studies and not depend on their devices. In 2025, the 18th Student Merit Scholarship will be held in the 1st week of November and the distribution of forms will start in the 1st week of June.
